CSHL Partnership

Hillside Campus, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory

The partnership between Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) and The Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation is at the forefront of revolutionizing cancer diagnosis and therapy. As one of the National Cancer Institute’s leading National Cancer Centers, CSHL is working to understand the processes that make cells cancerous. By identifying DNA mutations in cancer cells and by deciphering the behavior of cancer-gene networks, CSHL is establishing a new framework for the development of more effective and less toxic therapies to combat cancers.

Linked to CSHL, the legacy of The Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation – in supporting patient care through the North Shore-LIJ Health System – keeps getting stronger. CSHL cancer researchers in the Tita Monti Cancer Research Laboratory are led by Dr. Scott Lowe, Deputy Director of the CSHL Cancer Center. At the leading edge of international cancer research, Lowe and CSHL colleagues are deciphering why certain patients develop resistance to chemotherapy. Their results will guide the development of new and effective therapies for all cancer types, from leukemia and breast cancer to liver, prostate and lung cancer.

On June 12, 2009, the Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation joined CSHL to cut the ribbon on six new research buildings. Housed in the new Quick building is the Joseph and Tita Monti Research Center which serves as the hub for communication and intellectual exchange among the Laboratory’s cancer researchers. These researchers will be linking the genetic basis of cancer with therapeutic outcomes, with the goal of developing approaches to discover and test new therapeutic targets and strategies to combat the disease.
